Humberto Castro
b. 1957
Humberto Castro was born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. He is a graduate of the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts and the Higher Institute of Art in Havana.
Castro achieved notoriety in 1980's together with a handful of avant-garde young artists (among them, Elso Padilla, José Bedia and Tomás Sánchez), Castro began challenging preconceived notions and political dogma.
Their eclectic art was edgy and often controversial. The Generation of 80s, as they were collectively known, assimilated and adapted ideas from such diverse sources as Photo-Realism and Afro-Cuban rites. As further proof of their independent ways and original talent, each of the members of this pioneering group developed separate and distinctive styles.
Castro’s oeuvre combines mythical and actual events. This thematic fusion imbues the work with an alluring, visionary quality. His compositions, no matter how grim the subject matter, display an innate elegance, making them palatable and even lyrical at times. Castro is a master at capturing metamorphosis. His svelte figures seem to endlessly evolve from ethereal beings to earthlings.
Castro’s stirring palette and sensuous textures further enhance his bewitching designs.
MOA Curator Jorge Santis says contemporary issues of censorship and exile are subtly yet insightfully communicated in many of these allegorical canvases. During the last two decades, Castro held triumphant solo exhibitions in Berlin, Paris, Mexico City, and Caracas.

In the heart of Key West's historic Bight Marina, tucked along the colorful charm of Lazy Way Lane, visitors discover Fiovida Studio & Art Gallery — a space where art, story, and spirit merge into a single breath of wonder. Behind the lens and vision stands Tony Chatman, a longtime Key West resident whose images transform coastal beauty and global adventure into fine art masterpieces.
"Each image I create is more than a photograph—it's a story."
For Chatman, photography isn't just about capturing a scene — it's about preserving emotion. Every image reflects a life immersed in the natural world: from sunlit Florida mangroves to untamed African plains and tranquil Caribbean shores. His museum-quality prints invite viewers to pause, to travel, and to feel the pulse of the wild places that inspire them.
Before stepping fully into the art world, Tony spent over 25 years building and leading an architectural design software company. After selling it, he followed his long-held creative passion and transformed what had been a four-decade hobby into a vibrant second act.
"I've lived in Key West for over 20 years. When the opportunity came to take over a small gallery on Lazy Way Lane, it just felt right," he recalls. "This is home—and this is where I wanted to build something meaningful."
That something became Fiovida Studio & Art Gallery, a name that beautifully fuses two inspirations: his wife Fiorella, and the Costa Rican motto "Pura Vida"—meaning "pure life." Together, Tony and Fiorella remodeled the space, curated their collection, and launched the gallery last spring. Every piece inside is of their own creation.
While Tony focuses on capturing images from around the world, Fiorella handles the gallery's presentation—mounting, resin work, and the signature finishing touches that give each artwork its luminous depth and contemporary style.
The result is a gallery unlike any other: bold, serene, and deeply personal. Visitors often describe stepping into Fiovida as stepping into another world—one filled with color, texture, and emotion that lingers long after they've left.
Whether you're a collector seeking a statement piece or simply someone who loves the ocean and its endless stories, Fiovida offers a glimpse into the art of living "la vida pura."
